PROF. ANTHONI VAN NIEUWKERK

Professor Anthoni van Nieuwkerk holds an MA in political science from the University of Johannesburg and a PhD in international relations from Wits University, Johannesburg. He has been research-active from the early 1990s and has pursued an academic career in post-graduate teaching, supervision, and policy analysis from 2000. Following a distinguished career at Wits, Anthoni joined the Thabo Mbeki African School of Public and International Affairs at the University of South Africa in 2022 as professor of international and diplomacy studies. Anthoni is a skilled institutional architect and experienced academic manager, facilitator and programme evaluator. He publishes widely on African foreign and security policy, has participated in several scenarios exercises, and has extensive experience in advising policymakers and practitioners in the South African government, the Southern African Development Community, and the African Union. Anthoni has supervised over 60 Masters students and seven PhD candidates to graduation, coordinates a network of Southern African academics and practitioners- edits the Southern African Security Review, is a senior research associate at Good Governance Africa and visiting research fellow at the Wits School of Governance, and serves as editorial board member of several accredited journals.
